Jeans: Pants for men and women traditionally made of blue denim, but now available in a range of colours and styles: originally introduced by German-born Levi Strauss around 1850 in the United States as hard-wearing work trousers for gold-diggers. The craze for jeans reached Europe in the 1940s and they have been a staple of casual dress since the 1950s.
